Portland Weekend: Sunday

Image
(posted by Emily)  Sunday 28 September On Sunday, our main priority was getting some veggie ramen for lunch and some more tempeh ribs--I know, I know, silly priorities, but fun ones! Luckily, I convinced Rick to hit another Portland landmark before heading over to Mississippi Ave.... The last time we were at Voodoo Doughnuts, in the summer of 2012, I didn't get to go inside the shop since I was finding the nearest Chase bank. Rick is a good sport, and agreed to get in the line for some "pre-lunch." We didn't have to wait for too long, maybe 15 minutes. This fellow was emceeing the line, giving everyone the lay of the land, taking photos, and directing newcomers to the line.  Inside, it was fun to see all of the decor and the list of crazy doughnuts. On the ceiling is the giant foam doughnut, which I had heard about on one of my favorite podcasts, The Story .  We picked up two doughnuts, chocolate varieties ...

Portland Weekend: Friday (part two)

(posted by Emily) Based on some feedback from the R in E&R, I decided to split up these posts. Don't want to overwhelm anyone with too much content! Hopefully this makes things easier to read, and more manageable :)   We took the bus up to the Mississippi Ave, and the  Mississippi/Williams district  for lunch. There are a number of food carts here as well, and one of our must-hit food spots was located among them.  man on a mission I have been following  Homegrown Smoker  on  Instagram  for a few months and their food fascinates me. Well, they have great reviews and we had to give it a try.  HGS does burritos and sandwiches, but I came with a plan--if I'm coming for barbecue, I want it to look and taste like barbecue. I ordered the combo platter, with tempeh ribs, smoked soy curls, mac no cheese, baked beans,...

(posted by Emily)  Even though this post is labeled Friday, it has some of our Thursday night adventures, too! :)  Thursday 25 September 2014 With marching band in the fall and winter drumline in the spring, it is rare for us to have weekends with nothing going on. When we were planning out our lives this year, we noticed the last weekend in September was a free one for both of us, so we decided to check out a new city!  Portland is often described as a vegan mecca --there are tons of great restaurants, and almost every place in the city offers veg options. It is truly an integral part of the city's culture. We've only been to the city once  on a quick stop to go to the bank pick up Voodoo Doughnuts and are huge fans of Portlandia --it only makes sense that we would get there eventually! We left LAX late Thursday afternooon, with a quick connection through Oakland. A friend of mine is a teacher in Indiana, and her class is learning about the Un...
