Weekend in Cancun: Logistics and Lodging

I am trying something a little different with our latest vacation updates. Since our focus this spring break was rest and relaxation, I opted not to post every day and just enjoy the trip while we were on it. So, we are breaking things up a little differently this time! Let me know what you think!
This year, Rick and I are not fortunate enough to have the same spring break, but knew we still wanted to take a trip together. Instead of our typical week-long adventure, we planned a long weekend (Friday to Tuesday) in Cancun!
We had such a great time at the Hyatt Ziva over Labor Day Weekend, we decided to give Hyatt's Cancun property, the Hyatt Zilara, a chance.
Now it's time for a little logistics and lodging breakdown!
How We Got There: We flew Southwest from LAX to Cancun, with a connection through Austin on the way there. Our trip home was two legs as well, with a stop in Denver. Rick and I are lucky enough to have a Southwest Companion Pass, so the total cost for our airfare was only 35,490 points and $164.70 in fees/taxes. Because Southwest has opened up new routes to Mexico and the Caribbean, the Companion Pass has been an awesome perk for us this year.
Immigration and customs at the Cancun airport was kind of crazy--it seemed as though multiple flights were arriving all at the same time, and there was a huge crush of people attempting to do the same things all at once. It made for good people watching, but definitely took longer than we would have liked. There were people and families from all over the world, not just America coming to visit--who knew it was such a popular destination? This also proved that Americans are worst at queuing and most annoying in large groups.
Once we finally cleared customs, Rick had booked us a shuttle to our hotel through Happy Shuttle. He did a lot of research on the options available to us, and decided a private transport would be best. If you book a group shuttle, you have to wait to stop off at other hotels before your own. Also, cost wasn't too different, comparatively. It was only $50 roundtrip for the private transfer, when a group shuttle was $48--well worth the $2 if you ask me!
Where We Stayed: Like I touched on before, we chose the Hyatt Zilara because we had such a great time at Hyatt's all-inclusive property in Los Cabos. Rick and I are both Hyatt credit card holders, and earned two free nights each, to use anywhere in the world. Clearly, using those free nights at an all-inclusive property gets us more bang for our buck! We had used my free nights in Cabo, so Rick's went toward this trip. The remaining nights cost 25,000 points each.
The hotel was beautiful--very classically styled and decorated, with spacious rooms great beachfront property.
